The EU encourages the promotion of cultural tourism in European regions and cities
Within the framework of the EU Council on Education, Youth and Culture celebrated last 10th May, the Ministers of Culture from the 27 Member States discussed the role of culture in the development of European regions and cities and adopted a set of guidelines to be followed by both the European Commission and the EU Member States in order to consolidate the contribution of culture to the “Europe 2020 strategy”.
One of the conclusions adopted was the need to strengthen the role of European regions and cities when it comes to enhance both cultural attractiveness and greater sustainable tourism. Quoting the final report, Member States shall “foster greater awareness of the need to protect cultural and natural heritage, with a view to encouraging responsible attitudes among tourists and providers of tourist services". Besides, it says, "it is essential to promote cultural activities which take into account the specificities of each region and to allow the involvement and participation of local population".
The report sets also other guidelines, such as enhancing the creation of cultural and creative industries, especially SMEs; promoting the development of new skills in education, reinforcing cross-border cooperation and strengthening the investment in culture as a strategic element for economic development and regional cohesion.
