Within the context of the EU efforts to strengthen the European identity and citizenship, based on sharing the same democratic values and on the sense of being part of a common cultural space, the Committee of the Regions is drafting an opinion on the proposal for a decision of the European Parliament and the Council establishing a European Union action for the "European Heritage Label".

The Fundación Comunidad Valenciana – Región Europea, partner in charge of the communication of the project results at EU level, presented to rapporteur Mrs. Lacombe the position of the CHORD consortium about the European Heritage Label action in preparation by the European Commission.
The European Heritage Label (EHL) aims to promote cultural sites from all Member States, in order to emphasize the multi-dimensionality of the EU cultural heritage, in terms of fostering national and regional image and identity, encouraging intercultural dialogue, improving education, enhancing the economic and touristic attractiveness and also the sustainability of its regions. The EHL was launched in April 2006 as an intergovernmental initiative. The demand to develop it further as an action of the European Union benefited of the European Parliament support and was also outlined by an online consultation held between 20 March and 15 May 2009, according to which almost 90% of the participants believe that the EHL can contribute to achieving a greater sense of belonging to the EU.
